BREAKING THE CYCLE

By Evan Price

breaking the cycleAs we turn the corner on Winter and stride into Spring, many things happen. The snow begins to melt (unless your name is Rob Mueller…the snow never seems to melt in Iola WI), the trees begin to bloom, and allergies begin to flare up. Right around this time of year, my nose starts leaking like a faucet, and I can rattle off 12 or 13 sneezes in a row.

This is a common issue for pets as well (allergies in general…not the faucet thing).

Many dogs affected by seasonal allergies will start exhibiting symptoms, such as itchy, flaky, irritated skin, sneezing, hot spots, hair loss, and excessive biting, licking, and scratching. Often, the problems become progressively worse, because as the skin becomes more irritated, the urge to lick and soothe the affected area increases. This is why people who’s dogs are new to a raw diet will sometimes see a skin & coat problem get a little worse before it gets a lot better.

There are a few things that can be done to break the cycle. It goes without saying that a healthy, complete and balanced raw food diet is at the top of the list of solutions. Raw diets help to cleanse the body of toxins, which are expelled primarily through the skin. This is why people who are new to a raw diet will sometimes see a skin & coat problem get a little worse before it gets a lot better.

Probiotics are another great idea in this spot. As opposed to steroids or antibiotics which lower the immune system, probiotics help to boost the immune system so that it is better able to fight invaders. Yogurt, kefir, and cottage cheese are good examples of foods with a good supply of healthy bacteria. One can also find this, plus more in the E-BARF Plus supplement.

There are several other remedies that are good for helping to relieve the discomfort of allergies. Fish oil is a great source of omega-3 fatty acid, which helps to promote healthy skin and a glossy coat.
Lavender Noni Lotion lotion is a great way to provide fast and effective relief for hot spots, skin rashes, open sores, etc.
Sovereign Silver first aid gel is known to reduce topical pain, calm skin inflammation, fight minor skin infection, and promotes healing.
