Since writing my book-“Living Enzymes- The World’s Best Kept Pet Food Secret” I have gained a much better understanding of the importance of the body’s enzyme system. There are a few important points that I think warrant the emphasis and is worth repeating.
Advocates of raw feeding have learned that the value in feeding a raw food diet lies in its content of enzymes undamaged by the heat of cooking. Enzymes are responsible for every metabolic reaction that takes place in the dog’s body. Enzymes are protein molecules that are present in and produced by every cell of the body. They do the bodies actual work. When you denature enzymes with heat you permanently make them lose their biological activity.
There are basically three different types of enzymes; Metabolic enzymes that are responsible for all organ function, digestive enzymes produced in the body by the pancreas and salivary glands, and digestive enzymes present in food. Digestive enzymes are called pro-active enzymes because they only become active when they reach the site where they do their work. Otherwise, they would digest the pancreas if they were in an active form.
All of this information has been common knowledge for years, however, in 1943 understanding of enzyme physiology changed radically as a result of a study conducted at North Western University. A new law called “The Law Of Selective Secretion of Digestive Enzymes” was the result of this study. Basically, it states that the amount of digestive enzymes manufactured by the Pancreas in response to ingested carbohydrate, fat, and protein varies directly with the amount of these substances it is called upon to digest.
What does this mean? It means that in practice when dogs and cats are fed a raw meat diet, the pancreas only needs to secrete small amounts of enzymes, because the enzymes are already present in the food.
To put this in proper perspective, it would be best to compare this to a checking account. We are all born with a checking account filled with enzymes. A judicious person would contemplate every check written very carefully. When you eat a nutrient that requires more enzyme secretion it means writing a bigger check. From this philosophy comes our claim that Carnivores live longer when fed a raw meat diet. This is the reason why we feel this way. When the bank balance reads zero, life ends. What our dogs eat and how we manage their existence determines how long it takes to deplete the account.
